It has been nearly two years since the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. had to go into a patent on Cialis. That was only slightly more than the U. S. Food and Drug Administration had to do to get FDA approval to sell a drug.
Now Cialis, which has been nicknamed “The Viagra of the Nation”, is back.
“The Viagra of the Nation” is the second pill-to-pill, non-prescription erectile dysfunction treatment available in the US.
A Viagra-like drug — which means it works in the same way as Viagra — is the first that has been approved for the treatment of ED. And it is the first that has been approved to treat men with ED. Cialis works for up to 36 hours, but it does not help a man with erectile dysfunction.
Cialis also does not work for men who take nitrate medications (the same class of drugs that have been shown to be effective for many years in the treatment of angina and other chest pain).
Pfizer is not yet disclosing the full cost of Cialis in the US, but is hoping the company will start to offer a generic equivalent for the popular prescription drug.
So far, Pfizer Inc. has not disclosed the price for Cialis, but it is expected to bring about $1 billion in sales in the first year after which the drug will have to be taken. In addition, it will pay for the medication on top of a copayment that it will have for some time.
